IBCSG 34-05 / SWOG S0230 : POEMS - Prevention Of Early Menopause Study

Trial Status:Open to patient entry

Treatment type:Hormone

Stage of Disease:Early

Intent of Treatment:Anticancer

Title:

Phase III trial of LHRH analogue administration during chemotherapy to reduce ovarian failure following chemotherapy in early stage, hormonal receptor-negative breast cancer.

Summary:

Approximately one fourth of newly diagnosed breast cancers are found in women under the age of 50, with a large number of these individuals presenting with early stage disease. Adjuvant systemic chemotherapy has demonstrated increased survival outcomes in most subgroups and as a result it is being used increasingly even in low risk individuals. The consequence of long-term toxicities from chemotherapy becomes increasingly important as these younger women survive many years after their potentially curative therapy. One of the most common toxic effects of chemotherapy in young women is the damage caused to the ovaries which can result in early onset of menopause causing cessation of menses, hot flushes, mood changes, possible accelerated osteoporosis and infertility. This study will investigate the hypothesis that shutting down ovarian function will protect the ovarian tissue from the damaging effects of chemotherapy. It is hoped that protecting the ovaries from damage will result in the resumption of normal ovarian activity following treatment and therefore reduce the long term chemotherapy induced early menopause toxicities.
