The purpose of the SOLE study is to confirm previous research that extending hormonal therapy with the drug letrozole from the usual duration of about five years can prevent or delay breast cancer recurring in postmenopausal women.  The study is also seeking to find out if taking letrozole intermittently (9 months of treatment and 3 treatment-free months per year) is better than taking letrozole continuously for five years.

Worldwide we are seeking 4,800 women who:
  • Have previously been diagnosed with hormone sensitive breast cancer which was also detected in nearby lymph nodes;
  • Have been on, or are currently on, hormonal medication for the treatment of breast cancer – e.g. tamoxifen, letrozole (Femara®), anastrozole (Arimidex®) and/or exemestane (Aromasin®) – for at least 4 years (but not more than 6 years);
  • If hormonal treatment is complete, took the last tablet less than 1 year ago;
  • Are postmenopausal; and
  • Are currently free of breast cancer.
